For all my tastings I use either the Libbey Signature Kentucky Bourbon Trail Whiskey Glass or a traditional Glencairn glass. They both are great for nosing and help in discerning more subtle notes.

In-Depth Review of Nulu Toasted Barrel Bourbon

Founded in 2016, Prohibition Craft Spirits has quickly gained a reputation for their private barrel picks and sourcing of quality barrels for bourbon clubs. Not to mention that they have an onsite distillery where they handcraft other craft spirits as well!

In addition, Nulu Toasted Barrel is made with MGP bourbon (sourced) that is finished in toasted barrels, non-chill filtered, and then bottled at barrel proof - providing customers the full-bodied flavor and unique character only found by small batch whisky production.

I really like what they are doing. I love that MGP just keeps pumping out unique and interesting whiskey. This particular bottle (IN1) is exclusive to Indiana, but they are doing other releases across the country.

Nose

The Nose of Nulu bourbon is very nice. As soon as it reaches your nostrils, you are hit with a sweet, caramel scent that immediately sets your taste buds tingling. Vanilla undertones follow shortly after, providing further depth to the aroma. But that's just the beginning. As you breathe deeper, the scent evolves, giving way to the rich, buttery smell of toffee, roasted nuts, and the distinct scent of toasted oak.

It's a complex fragrance that warrants taking your time to fully appreciate. And while the notes of caramelized sugar and vanilla linger on the nose, a faint hint of ethanol serves as a gentle reminder that this is a 115.4 proof bourbon whiskey!

Palate

Nulu Toasted Barrel is a bourbon that provides a unique palate experience. The combination of vanilla and toffee at first sip is a delicious start, but it's the addition of toasted marshmallow, baking spices, and a hint of Red Hots candy that really sets this bourbon apart. A surprisingly interesting experience considering this is a blend of 4-6-year-old bourbon whiskey. I have seen some other reviews that have noted black coffee but I'm not getting that on this bottling.

Finish

The finish is reminiscent of campfires and s'mores, with a lingering flavor of toasted marshmallows and baking spices. The finish is long and warm with great viscosity and mouth coating. Nulu Bourbon Toasted Barrel offers a complex yet approachable taste that I really enjoyed!

Overall

Nulu Toasted Barrel is a 115.4 proof bourbon that offers a unique palate experience with the combination of vanilla, toffee, and marshmallow notes, as well as baking spices and a hint of Red Hots candy. The finish is reminiscent of campfires and s'mores, with a lingering flavor of toasted marshmallows and baking spices.

It offers an interesting yet approachable taste that stands out from other bourbons. I have to reiterate that this drinks like a much more mature bourbon. If I didn't know better I probably would have guessed it was 8-9 years old. I am looking forward to trying more of their releases! Hopefully, they keep sourcing MGP bourbon.

I don't typically love "craft" bourbon whiskey and I honestly did not expect to like this bourbon, but in the end, I really enjoyed doing this tasting! I give Nulu Bourbon Toasted Barrel a Fool-Proof Rating of 86%.

I would love to hear from you! Drop me a comment below and let me know what you think of this whiskey.

Below are my favorite glasses for doing tastings. The Libbey Signature Kentucky Bourbon Trail Whiskey Glass is my favorite because it has a little more heft to it and feels better in my hand than the traditional Glencairn glass does.
